ARTR (Almost Ready To Run)
The USS Nimitz (CVN-68) is the first aircraft carrier of the class named for it in the United States Navy. It was named for Chester W. Nimitz, the supreme commander of the Pacific Fleet in the Second World War.
The ship was built by the Newport News Shipbuilding Company in Newport News, Virginia. The keel of the USS Nimitz was laid on June 22, 1968; on May 3, 1975, US President Gerald Ford put the ship into service at the Naval Station in Norfolk, Virginia.
